What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain that control mood. TMS is a breakthrough therapy for sufferers of depression, anxiety and PTSD who have not achieved full remission, despite having trialled antidepressants and talking therapy.
What to expect
TMS sessions are less than 30 minutes in duration and are usually carried out five times a week for up to 6 weeks. This can be altered to suit your needs.
During treatment
Here is what to expect during your sessions:
- You’ll be seated in our treatment chair, listening to music with the magnetic coil placed gently against your head.
- When the machine is on you will feel a light tapping on your head where the coil is located.
- Sessions last approximately 20 minutes, you will be awake and alert during the procedure.
Post Treatment & Results
Because TMS is non-invasive you are able to return to your normal activities right away. If TMS works for you, your symptoms of depression, anxiety or PTSD will improve and may go away completely. It is important to remember that results will vary from person to person.
Key points about transcranial magnetic stimulation:
- TMS is an evidence-based effective treatment of depression, anxiety and PTSD.
- Therapy sessions are conducted in our Cairns practice.
- You can return to normal activities right away.
- Treatments do not cause impairment of memory or affect your sleep.
- Treatment sessions last approximately 20 minutes.
Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)
Transcranial direct current stimulation is a non-invasive device that delivers low, direct current via electrodes applied to the head. This safe treatment can be delivered at home, guided by your treating psychiatrist and the accompanying smartphone app. You will receive regular follow-up care during your treatment.
Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS)
Theta-burst stimulation is an effective antidepressant treatment for Major Depressive Disorder.
Theta-burst Stimulation (also known as TBS) is a novel form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), providing patients with an alternative treatment option. The treatment is safe and non-invasive. TBS uses a faster frequency (50Hz instead of 10HZ). It also requires less time per session compared to regular rTMS protocols. TBS is dramatically reduced to shorter intervals. TBS and rTMS are both FDA approved and sown to be equally effective.
